We hope you’ve all had a great summer and are raring to get back into Scouting. After all the excitement of Summer Camps, sailing days and more, the leader teams have been busy building an exciting programme of activities for the term ahead, focussing as always on adventure and Skills for Life. We’ve also got some great family activities coming up, with Old Leigh Regatta only a week away, Duke of Edinburgh Expeditions at the end of the month, a relaxing Soundbath evening, and much more.

We’re also in search of a new Cub Leader, as Chantal steps down after 12 years with the Pack. We’d like to thank her for her commitment to the Group over all these years, but are sure this won’t be a full farewell from 3rdCB.

Here’s everything you need to know this month:

  • Autumn Term Start Dates
  • Old Leigh Regatta – 12-13 Sep
  • Zen with Ben – 22 Sep
  • DofE Intro Night – 29 Sep
  • Could you be the next Akela?

Old Leigh Regatta

12-13 September

Old Leigh Regatta is almost upon us, a weekend of family fun across Old Leigh all hosted by 3rdCB in support of local Scouting, and we need your help to make it a fantastic weekend.

We’ve got a full weekend family street festival ready to go, with so much on offer. The road is closed and filled with stalls, games, entertainment, live music, sailing and competitions between the Sea Scout Groups. It’s one of our biggest fundraising events of the year and a huge amount of fun.

We need help from youth members and families over the weekend to run stalls and games, help set up, and take part in the competitions on and off the water. Please sign up for a few slots through the link below:

We also need donations of cakes for the Scout Tea Tent (must be nut free and all ingredients listed). Please drop these to the Den Friday evening from 7.00, or Sat/Sun morning.

Come down in your 3rdCB polo and scarf and join in the fun!

Silent Disco

If you loved last year’s Silent Disco on the Saturday evening of Old Leigh Regatta – it’s back!

After a day of festivities why not join us for the finale of day one and dance the night away with our DUELLING DJs! Get your tickets at:

Zen Soundbath Evening

Tue 22 Sep @ 1915

Join us for an evening of relaxation by the sea in Old Leigh. Zen with Ben is providing the chill-out vibes with a Soundbath evening at The Den, helping us fundraise to support 3rdCB’s Scouting activities.

A Soundbath is a relaxing experience where crystal singing bowls and instruments create resonant tones that help calm the nervous system. Simply lie down and allow the sound vibrations to guide you into a relaxed state.

The jetty will be open for anyone wanting to enjoy the sea breeze or swim beforehand.

The evening costs £25.
Book at 3rdCB.org.uk/zen
Over-18s only please.

DofE Intro Evening

Tue 29 Sep @ 1900

Alongside Scouting, 3rd Chalkwell Bay gives Sea Scouts and Explorers the opportunity to complete the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) with us, building on their Scouting skills and encouraging them to learn new ones.

We are holding an information and registration evening on Tuesday 29 September from 19:00, where you can find out more about what the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme is.

Participants must be in Year 9 or above to register for Bronze. We have run DofE at 3rdCB for the past seven years, and participants have successfully completed Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards. We plan to run all these award levels again in 2027.

Could you be our next Akela?

After 12 years as a member of the Cub Leader Team, and 3 years as Akela, Chantal Kent is stepping down from the Cub Pack to spend more time with her family.

During these years she’s developed a positive and engaging environment for the young people and leaders, keeping up our tradition of being one of the best Cub Packs in the area.

So what next… we need your help in finding our next Cub Leader!

We are looking for someone who is passionate about working with young people, enjoys creating fun and adventure, and would like to make a real difference to the lives of our 8 to 10-year-olds as part of a great team.

If you think you, or someone you know, could be our next Akela, we would love to hear from you. Drop Dan Parsons, our Lead Volunteer, a line at GSL@3rdCB.org.uk to find out more.

Activities Roundup

Summer Camps

The highlight of our year – summer camp didn’t disappoint this year.

The Beavers, Cubs and Scouts were in Suffolk at Haughley Park, braving the heat in a back-to-basics camp with a mix of games, cooking over open fires, and a trip to the beach to cool off for the Scouts.

Meanwhile, the Explorers headed off to Cornwall, camping next to the beach and getting adventurous with activities including surfing and coasteering, plus lots of swimming and campfires on the beach.

EYC Cadet Week

To round off the holidays we were invited to join EYC’s Cadet Week, for a week of sailing, games and entertainment.

It was a windy week, and all the Scouts & Explorers who entered did really well, with a few capsizes and a really noticeable increase in their sailing ability and confidence, especially in a large fleet.

Leigh Creek Duck Race

We helped the Leigh Lions with the annual Leigh Creek Duck Race in June, helping 1,500 rubber ducks race their way along the creek from Leigh Beach to Osbornes café raising money for charity.

Always a great spectacle, and a lot of fun playing in the mud before the start too. Thanks to all who helped out.

Sailing

We’ve certainly made the most of the summer getting out on the water at every opportunity. We’ve mixed open boating sessions in Old Leigh with trips along the coast for ice cream and upwind sailing practice, along with a lot of capsize drills and messing about in the sea.

The sailing season’s not over yet, so keep an eye out on the group calendar and Facebook for upcoming boating sessions.
