Since the publication of Scouting for Boys in 1908, all Scouts around the world have taken a promise to live up to ideals of the movement, and subscribed to a Scout Law.

The wording of the Scout Promise and Scout Law have varied slightly over time and from country to country. Typically, Scouts will make the three-fingered Scout Sign when reciting the promise.

We renew our promise every year in April.

To do my duty to God and to the King,
To help other people,
And to keep the Scout Law.

  • A Scout is loyal.
  • A Scout is friendly and considerate.
  • A Scout belongs to the world-wide family of Scouts.
  • A Scout has courage in all difficulties.
  • A Scout makes good use of time and is careful of possessions and property.
  • A Scout has self-respect and respect for others.
