Summer is mostly here and we’ve all been out and about a lot so far this term, with games, mountain biking, hiking, sailing and much more, and even more to come.

We’re all gearing up for various Summer Camps in July, and there’s still time to sign up via the Parent Portal if you haven’t already. The two Sea Scout Troops have already had their first taste of camping this year with PL training camps to brush up on skills and leadership before the summer (plus some wet weather routines).

Here’s everything you need to know this month:

  • Leigh Creek Duck Race – Sun 21 June
  • Summer Camp Hoodies
  • Zen with Ben Soundbath Evening – Tue 7 July
  • Theo’s Icelandic Adventure
  • Open Boating – Sun 28 June

Leigh Creek Duck Race

Sun 21 June @ 1230

Calling Scouts and Explorers: next Sunday is the annual Leigh Creek Duck Race organised by the Leigh Lions, and we need your help to get them on their way.

Over 1,400 rubber ducks will be racing along the creek from Bell Wharf to Osbornes’ Cafe, raising money for charity. We’ll be helping set them on their way, race along the creek, and catching them at the end. It’s a great site to see and be part of (and we get a nice donation from the Lions for our help).

Arrive at The Den at 1230 with swimming gear, a towel and suitable footwear to go on the mud. Parents & friends – you can buy a duck from the Leigh Lions stands in the Old Town or in their shop on London Road (nr Thames Drive). If your duck wins you win a cash prize!

Summer Camp Hoodies

We’re doing special Summer Camp Hoodies again for this year’s camp, a favourite from previous years and great way to keep warm in the evenings.

They cost £18, and are navy blue with the gold 3rdCB badge stitched on the front, and “Summer Camp” printed in white on the back.

Order yours at 3rdCB.org.uk/hoodie before 21 June. We’ll give them out as we arrive at camp. Please note, these are not for Explorers going to their Cornwall Summer Camp (as they’ll be in a different place and have their own Endeavour hoodies).

If you’ve not already signed up for summer camp, there still time until the end of the month. See the Parent Portal Events section for details.

Zen Soundbath Evening

Tue 7 July @ 1915

Join us for an evening of relaxation in by the sea Old Leigh. Zen with Ben is providing the chill out vibes with a Soundbath evening at The Den, helping us fundraise to support 3rdCB’s Scouting activities.

A Soundbath is a relaxing experience where crystal singing bowls and instruments create resonant tones that help calm the nervous system. Simply lie down and allow the sound vibrations to guide you into a relaxed state.

The jetty will be open for anyone wanting to enjoy the sea breeze or swim beforehand. The evening costs £25.
Book at 3rdcb.org.uk/zen. (Over18s only please).

Theo’s Icelandic Adventure

Explorer Scout Theo has been selected to represent Essex Scouts on next year’s Iceland 2027 Expedition. The two-week expedition in the summer will be based at the Úlfljótsvatn Scout Centre, the northernmost Scout camp in the world, and will feature glacier walking, white-water rafting, and exploring Reykjavík.

He’s raising £500 by walking an entire marathon along the Saffron Trail from Leigh-on-Sea to Chelmsford on Sunday 19th July. Theo says “Although I am a keen hiker, I’ve never walked anywhere near this distance before so I’m excited to do it for the first time!” If you want to support Theo’s fundraising his JustGiving page is at justgiving.com/crowdfunding/theo-harris-iceland2027

Open Boating Session

Sun 28 June – 0930-1500

The next open boating session for Sea Scouts and Explorers is Sunday 28 June, starting at 0930.

These are sessions for Sea Scouts & Explorers to get on the water sailing using our fleet of sailing dinghies. Sessions are always supervised by a suitably qualified leader, and no experience is necessary. You will need to bring suitable clothing to go afloat which you don’t mind getting wet (and you will get wet!). Footwear is required on the water – wet boots or old trainers are ideal, flip flops and wellies are not appropriate. Buoyancy aids are mandatory for all activities on the water, and will be supplied. You may also want to bring a packed lunch and drink, or money for chips.
