Welcome to November’s Group newsletter (a little later than planned as your editor found himself deployed to the Middle East).

Our youth sections have been as busy as ever this month, learning new skills and having a great time. Solebay Troop have had scouting skills evenings of tying knots and learning their practical uses, practising colours an their piping skills, and drill in preparation for Remembrance Day parade. The Troops have held a Halloween party, the ever-entertaining Renown’s Got Talent, and a brilliant joint Bonfire & Fireworks evening which has become a noisy annual tradition. The Cubs have been learning DIY and how to build things, and we’ve invested lots of new Beavers, Cubs and Sea Scouts to start their Scouting journeys with us as well.

As a few storms have battered Old Leigh over the past few weeks, thanks to the adults who’ve come to The Den at short notice to make sure all our boats and equipment are secured outside and kept safe.

In this newsletter:

Remembrance Day Parades

On Sunday the Sea Scouts and Explorers joined veterans, dignitaries, emergency services and youth groups from across Southend at our city’s cenotaph for the Remembrance Sunday service, honouring those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service of their country at the City’s Cenotaph for the 2 minutes silence and march past.

Thank you to all who were part of the Parade. 3rdCB were again the largest contingent and as smart as ever – a credit to your Group and to Scouting. 3rdCB also stepped in to organise the Leigh-on-Sea Remembrance Day service that afternoon, bringing together teams from across our town for a service at St Clement’s and parade through Leigh to the community centre, and providing standard bearers & escorts.

Fundraising Curry Night

Sun 19 Nov – 16:00 @ Tandoori Parlour

We’re holding a fundraising dinner at The Tandoori Parlour in Benfleet, as a nice opportunity to get everyone together socially, and raising funds to support activities at 3rdCB in the process.

The price is £15 (and £12 for children under 12), open to all families and friends of 3rdCB. This includes a set mixed starter, followed by an unlimited buffet. We will be able to keep a few tables after the meal for those who would like to stay on for a drink.

Book online at 3rdCB.org.uk/curry before Thursday 16 Nov.

We’ll be running a few games and fundraising activities during the evening as well like a 100 square, Heads & Tails Game etc., so please bring some change with you. We look forward to seeing lots of you there on the night!

Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Intro Evening

Wed 22 Nov @ 20:15

Alongside Scouting, 3rd Chalkwell Bay gives Sea Scouts and Explorers the opportunity to complete the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE) with us, building on their Scouting skills and encouraging them to learn new ones.

We are holding an information and registration evening on Wed 22nd November from 20:15 for anyone in school year 9 or over (and parents) that is interested, where you can find out more about what the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme is. If you would like to register interest and you can join our evening session please could you drop us a return email to dofe@3rdCB.org.uk so we can make sure there are enough chairs and literature available.

NHS Teenage Vaccines Research

The NHS are currently looking for 12–15-year-olds in the East of England to tell them what they think about vaccines and side effects and would love to hear from you!

If you’re in school years 8-10 (parents, please pass this on to your Scout) and can spare 30-40 minutes to talk to a researcher you get a £20 Amazon voucher for your time and take part in important government research. Full details are at http://epr.hpru.nihr.ac.uk/news/teenagers-and-vaccinations.

Trafalgar Night Dinner & Social Programme

Thank you to everyone that supported our Trafalgar Night Dinner in October. A great evening of dinner, chat and entertainment (and rugby) held in the fitting maritime setting of the former HMS Wilton.

Our events team are building a programme of fun social events for next year (starting with a curry night on Sunday, see above) which we hope you’ll enjoy and use to get together socially for a bit of fun. Watch this space for the full 2024 programme.
