3rd Chalkwell Bay is recognised by the Royal Yachting Association (the national governing body for sailing and motor boating in the UK) as a training centre. This means that we can teach, assess and award certificates of competence in dinghy sailing and power boating. This allows us to combine the teaching of the Scout Association’s nautical skills & sailing badges with nationally recognised qualifications.
The RYA Establishment is operated within The Den by a team of professionally trained & qualified sailing and power boating instructors, all of whom are volunteers.
Throughout the year we run a variety of courses, the current training calendar is at the bottom of this page, and you can book a place on a course here.
We can run the following RYA courses for our members:
- Youth Scheme – Start Sailing Stage 1
- Youth Scheme – Start Sailing Stage 2
- Youth Scheme – Start Sailing Stage 3

Improving Sailing Skills
Sail a double handed boat as crew or helm, and solve a variety of problems afloat. By the end of the course you will be able to launch and return to a beach, jetty or mooring, and sail a crewed dinghy around a triangle in moderate conditions.
Pre-requisites: Unless agreed with the instructor team, you should have already completed the RYA Stage 3 course, plus at least 6 hours of practice over 3/4 sessions (either at The Den, or your own sailing club).
Duration: This is a two day course running all weekend. Attendance is required on both days to complete the course.
Cost: £15. This is to cover the RYA youth sailing logbook (if required), certificate and safety boat fuel. (This is much less than cost price). The instructors are volunteers and are not paid.
Booking: See 3rdCB.org.uk/courses for more details or to book a place on this course.
Full details on timings and what to bring will be sent two weeks before the course. Contact boating@3rdCB.org.uk if you have any further questions.
