Renown Sea Scout TroopThe Renown Sea Scout Troop for boys aged 10-14 meets every Friday at the Den between 19:15 and 21:30. The original Scout section in 3rdCB is one of the most active and popular Scout Troops the area.

Renown Troop run a very active programme; regular activities include sailing training expeditions, hillwalking weeks in Derbyshire, and camping, and of course training in all the skills required to do these safely. Others activities include building and launching rockets, night hikes, wide games, cooking, pioneering and camp craft evenings.

Scouts sailingAs a Sea Scout Group, there is a large emphasis on sailing an water activities. 3rdCB is a recognised training centre for both the Royal Yachting Association, and the British Rowing Association, with leaders qualified by the national governing bodies to run courses in sailing, powerboating and rowing, to name but a few. There is boating available most weekends, depending on the tide, with courses designed to take young people from the very basics up to advanced levels on the water.

scouts-friday-campingThe Troop has around 65 Scouts who are split into eight patrols: Stormy Petts (STP), Puffins, Seals, Merlins, Gannets, Curlews, Seagulls and Penguins. Each patrol is run by a Patrol Leader (PL), and his assistant (APL), who are senior boys responsible for training, discipline and general welfare of the Scouts in their charge. There is also a Senior PL (SPL), who is responsible for the day-to-day running of the Troop along with a large team of qualified leaders and instructors.

When Scouts reach the age of 14 they can move on to the Endeavour Explorer Sea Scout Unit which is also based at 3rd CB, for more challenges and adventure.

This summer we will be holding a Group Camp for Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers.

We all camp in tents for the week, with Scouts & Explorers cooking in their patrols over open fires in a back to basics style. There will be a number of activities, games and competitions throughout the week as well as a day or two off-site to the beach and/or local town.

Beavers camp for the first weekend, Cubs Saturday to Thursday, Scouts/Explorers Saturday to Saturday.

Timings

Drop Off: Saturday, 27th July – 10.00am. The coaches will be boarded at the large bus stop by Westcliff High School for Boys on Kenilworth Gdns. Parents can park in the playground to the rear of the boy’s school. All Scouts must be in Square rigs, Scarves, uniform trousers and uniform shoes (blue/black socks). Caps must be brought. You must also bring your Jumper for Church parade as well as your Group Polo shirt for the trip off site. Kit will be stowed in the coaches. A packed lunch is required.

Collection (Scouts/Explorers): Saturday, 3rd August – 4pm(ish). Arrive back at Leigh Railway station short stay car park at 4.00pm (depending on traffic). Please do not park in the short stay car park as it causes too much chaos and is potentially dangerous with the number of parents/scouts there. Instead please park in the long stay car park behind the station or in the smaller car park by the tip.

Cake Competition

If anyone is keen on baking please send along a cake (or small cakes) with your child. We will use these for their supper and as a bit of fun will be judged in a competition (no prizes except public recondition and glory of your baking skills!). Please do not send any chocolate or creamy cakes as we will struggle to keep them fresh, and they MUST be sent in a plastic sealable box (not just in cling film or foil) along with the Scout’s name written on.

Other Details

Medication. If your child needs to take medication whilst at camp, please inform the relevant section leader (Jon Whiteley for Renown Troop or Karen Cruiks for Solebay Troop). Do NOT send any private personal first aid kits to camp. All first aid equipment is provided. We have arranged details with the local Doctors to provide medical treatment if required. You should have completed a medical form for your son or daughter. If you think that you have not, please contact the section leader.

Pocket money. We recommend no more than £25 for the week, and please make sure that it comes in change rather than notes and in a moneybag clearly marked with the Scout’s name. This should be paid into the camp bank as this will stop it being lost, which will be open each day

The Theme day this year is Underground Stations. Scouts will need to take along fancy dress for that day. It will be judged as a Patrol Competition, so be as creative as possible. The Patrols will decide their station in advance and PLs must inform patrol members of what they plan to do, as well as what they will do with decorating their tent and site, well before we go to camp.

Advance Party. PLs on the advance party are to meet at The Den at 8.30am on Friday 26th July. Group polo shirts and uniform (incl. Jumper, square rig, trousers and shoes) do not need to be worn, but must be brought. A packed lunch will be required. Personal kit will go on the minibuses with the PLs on the Friday morning.

All PLs are required to help load the lorry on the Thursday evening (26th July) at 6pm at the Den. You should be done by about 7.30pm.

The Leigh Regatta in Leigh-on-Sea is an annual community & charity event organised by the Sea Scout/Explorer Groups based in the Old Town along with the Leigh Lions. Each year, the event raises money for nominated charities as well as for the local Scout Groups around Leigh-on-Sea.

The Old Leigh High Street will close for the whole day, allowing the Leigh Regatta to take full advantage of the space for all the entertainment, craft stalls, side shows, competitions and water events, including sailing run by EYC & LSC, the Scout Pentathlon, Cub Welly Hoying, live music, fun stalls and entertainers.

All Scouts & Explorers are asked to help on stalls, raise money and set up/pack up on the day. We also need support from parents and families on stalls and in the tea tent, and donations of prizes for our stalls which raise funds for 3rdCB. This is our biggest fund raising event of the year, if you can help out please talk to any of the leaders.

We’re after donations of cakes, teddies, jumble and old crockery, so if you like backing or are having a post-summer clear out, please drop them into The Den before the Regatta.

We’re also after adult help in the tea tent and on the Scout stalls on the day. If you have an hour or two free and are able to help out please drop us an email at TheDen@3rdCB.org.uk with when you’re about to we can put a rota together, or just pop down on the day and talk to one of the leaders.

RYA Sailing Stage 1&2

Start sailing
Learn a basic understanding of how a boat sailing, with some experience of steering and handling the boat. By the end of the course you will have learnt a range of sailing skills and knowledge to help in becoming a confident sailor.

Duration: 2 Days. Attendance on both days is required to complete the course.

Cost: £15. This is to cover the RYA youth sailing logbook, certificate and safety boat fuel. (This is much less than cost price). The instructors are volunteers and are not paid.

Harvest Festival Church Parade

Meet at The Den at 10:30 in full uniform as usual. We will parade from The Den to New Road Church. Parents are welcome to join us for the service. We will be finished at The Den at 1215.

As this is the Harvest Festival church parade please bring a non-perishable food item such as TIns or Pasta which will be donated to local charities.

Christmas Toy and Carol Service

Our December Church Parade takes place in The Den, with families and the congregation from the Fisherman’s Chapel invited to join us. This is held as a toy & carol service at our usual time of 10.30 for an 11.00 start on Sunday 16th December.

Families and friends are very welcome to join us to sing some carols, and we will be delighted if you will join us afterwards for mince pies and coffee.

Toy Sunday Service 2014The toys received have gone for many years to the Marigold Centre which gives support to troubled families within Southend Borough. The centre can only accept new toys in their original wrappings (with instructions etc) and not gift wrapped.

For our youth members who are thinking of others at this time of year and wish to donate their own toys that they have either outgrown or don’t use (and maybe make space for their new Christmas presents), we will gladly also receive these, and pass them to  HARP – a local homeless project which we also support. Again, please leave these unwrapped to they can be given out appropriately.

Hopefully you will encourage your child to buy a new gift with their own pocket money to give some joy to a child less fortunate.

The Scouts’ annual Easter Walking and Activity Week to Castleton in the Derbyshire Peak District will take place during the first week of the Easter holidays from Saturday 4 April to Friday 10 April (Good Friday) .

We have a varied programme including hill walking, swimming and other activities such as cycling and low-level climbing, as well as the opportunity to head into the local village and activities & games in the centre. We have exclusive use of the Rotary Centre in Castleton, with several buildings including a purpose-build dormitory block with bunk bed accommodation in rooms of four and central heating.

Walking groups are based on age and experience, and are led by an experienced leader or instructor. For the older Scouts there may be the opportunity (weather permitting) to go wild or high camping, an experience that will leave some great memories.

EIJ2020 is coming! We will be returning to Boyton Cross, Chelmsford from the 1st to the 8th of August 2020 for another unforgettable seven days and nights, bringing Scouts and Guides together from across the UK and around the world.

In 2016, we saw 10,000 of us (plus over 2,000 volunteers) come together, making international friendships and challenging ourselves with over 100 activities from abseiling to zorbing.

About the Jamboree

For Summer Camp in 2020, the Scouts are planning to go to the Essex International Jamboree. (Registration doesn’t open until September, so we’ll confirm once our application to go is accepted)

The Jamboree is held every 4 years near to Chelmsford, we went for the first time in 2016 and the Scouts all had a whale of a time, so we’re planning to return in 2020.

eij2The format is very different from our normal camps and we will be camping alongside up to 10,000 Scouts and Guides from across Britain and around the world. The emphasis is on activities, and on this occasion the leaders will do all the cooking while the Scouts go off and enjoy themselves doing various activities. These activities are on the purpous-built site and run by trained staff who are generally leaders from other groups all over the country. There is much more of a festival atmosphere to the camp with activities laid on every evening as well as during the day.

What is Essex Jamboree

Put simply, it’s an enormous camp for Scouts and Guides from around the world; it lasts 1 week, but takes 3 years to plan. It’s a famous event in the Scout and Girlguiding world, and is renowned for being one of the best jamborees.

The event is held in a huge field every four years at Boyton Cross near Chelmsford, Essex, which is only 40 miles from London and it’s major transport hubs.

This 120-acre green field is transformed by 1,500 volunteers into a fully operational tented village. By this we mean it has all the facilities you’d expect – water, showers, toilets, electrics, communications, food distribution, health and welfare services and even a beach!

On Saturday 1st August, our Jamboree will open again to 10,000 Scouts and Guides from all over the world to camp together for a week of fun, discovery and adventure, embracing the spirit of Scouting and Girlguiding.

We have a varied and exciting programme of activities including a range of adventurous, creative and cultural activities following the Scout and Guide programme, as well as opportunities to meet new friends from around the world.

In the evening the Jamboree becomes even more vibrant with entertainment including a dance tent, live acts, food outlets and even a cinema!

Essex International Jamboree promises to be an unforgettable experience, providing skills for life, building new friendships, and memories to last a lifetime.
