The Renown Sea Scout Troop for boys aged 10-14 meets every Friday at the Den between 19:15 and 21:30. The original Scout section in 3rdCB is one of the most active and popular Scout Troops the area.
Renown Troop run a very active programme; regular activities include sailing training expeditions, hillwalking weeks in Derbyshire, and camping, and of course training in all the skills required to do these safely. Others activities include building and launching rockets, night hikes, wide games, cooking, pioneering and camp craft evenings.
As a Sea Scout Group, there is a large emphasis on sailing an water activities. 3rdCB is a recognised training centre for both the Royal Yachting Association, and the British Rowing Association, with leaders qualified by the national governing bodies to run courses in sailing, powerboating and rowing, to name but a few. There is boating available most weekends, depending on the tide, with courses designed to take young people from the very basics up to advanced levels on the water.
The Troop has around 65 Scouts who are split into eight patrols: Stormy Petts (STP), Puffins, Seals, Merlins, Gannets, Curlews, Seagulls and Penguins. Each patrol is run by a Patrol Leader (PL), and his assistant (APL), who are senior boys responsible for training, discipline and general welfare of the Scouts in their charge. There is also a Senior PL (SPL), who is responsible for the day-to-day running of the Troop along with a large team of qualified leaders and instructors.
When Scouts reach the age of 14 they can move on to the Endeavour Explorer Sea Scout Unit which is also based at 3rd CB, for more challenges and adventure.

This year’s Troop Training & Activity Camp is over the weekend of Fri 17 – Sun 19 June at Belchamps Scout Activity Centre. In the run-up to summer camp, this weekend is a great refresher on how to pitch the tents, light fires and cook meals. It also helps the Patrol Leaders plan their summer camp routines and is a fun taster for Scouts who have not camped with Scouts before. As well as training we’ll be making use of some of the on-site activities.
The camp starts on Friday at 18:30, and finishes on Sunday at 15:00. Parents will need to drop off and collect their child from the campsite.
Cost
The cost of the weekend is £38.00, which covers everything including all food and activities.
The fee is non-refundable, unless we are forced to cancel the camp (eg a chance in COVID restrictions), in which case we’ll provide full refunds.

We all have a responsibility to keep The Den clean & tidy, and to ensure that the boats are bailed regularly, particularly during the winter months. One Sunday a month, the Scouts and Explorers take it in turns (by Patrol/Division) to be the Sunday Duty Patrol and keep our HQ and equipment sunning properly.
Each section provides Duty Officer to oversee the work of the Duty Patrol, and The Den is open at 10.30 on Sunday. Duty Patrol should last no more than two hours and you will see that that you are Duty Patrol only once a year; two hours a year is all we ask so please make sure that you do your bit to help.
If the tide is out you may have to walk out on the mud in to bail out the boats. For this you will need Wellington boots and warm clothes in the winter. Please also make sure you wear old clothes as you may get dirty.
If you cannot attend Duty Patrol, please advise both your Patrol/Division Leader and your Section Leader.
Bring with you:
- Old Clothing
- Wellington Boots (if you have to go on the mud to bail the boats)
