Learn a basic understanding of how a boat sailing, with some experience of steering and handling the boat

Duration: 1 day

Cost: £15

This is to cover the RYA youth sailing logbook, certificate and safety boat fuel. (This is much less than cost price). The instructors are volunteers and are not paid.

Open boating session at The Den for all Sea Scouts and Explorers.

Sessions for any Scout or Explorer to go on the water rowing or sailing. Sessions are always supervised by a suitable leader, and no experience is necessary. There is no charge for participating in open boating, just ensure you are down in time for the start time above.

You will need to bring suitable clothing to go afloat which you don’t mind getting wet (and you will get wet!). Footwear is required on the water – wet boots or old trainers are ideal, flips flops and wellies are not appropriate. Buoyancy aids are mandatory for all activities on the water, and will be supplied. You may also want to bring a packed lunch and drink, or money for chips.

Rigging, launching and sailing in any direction. By the end of the course you will be able to launch and sail a dinghy around a triangle in moderate conditions.

Pre-requisites:

  • RYA Sailing Stage 2 (unless agree with the instructor team).
  • At least 6 hours of practice logged over 3-4 sessions (either at The Den or your own sailing club), recorded in your log book.

Duration: 2 days

This is a two day course running all weekend. Attendance is required on both days to complete the course.

RYA Seamanship Skills

Handle a boat in all circumstances and solve problems afloat

Includes launching and recovering the boat in different circumstances, stopping, reducing sail, recovering a man overboard, anchoring.

By the end of the course you will be able to handle a wide range of situations afloat.

Pre-requisites

Unless agreed with the instructor team, you should have already completed the RYA Stage 3 or 4 course, plus at least a further 6 hours or practice over 3/4 sessions, recorded in your log book.

Duration: 2 days

This is a two day course running all weekend. Attendance is required on both days to complete the course.

Learn to fly a spainnaker

An introduction to sailing dinghies with spinnakers. The course includes rigging a spinnaker sail, more advanced sailing techniques and manoeuvres as helm and crew using equipment to advantage, hoisting, gybing, dropping, apparent wind.
