On 23 April, BBC Children in Need and Comic Relief are getting together for the Big Day In (on radio), and the Big Night In on BBC1 from 7pm. They’ll celebrate the people making a difference across the UK and fundraise to support the people most affected by the coronavirus crisis.
Scouts from across the country are getting involved too – we’re asking young people and their families to hike just one mile each – we’ve done the maths, and it’s about 2,000 steps or 20 minutes walking on the spot.
You can hike around your home or garden, or out on your daily exercise if you’re able to.
So get started now by pulling on your walking boots (or your slippers), recording your miles and making donation to Children in Need. It took the Apollo XI crew three days to reach the Moon – let’s see how long it takes Scouts!
After many years of discussion, planning and fundraising, we’re finally ready to start work refurbishing our HQ’s site.
We’re making the most of the pause in face-to-face Scouting and the first phase is starting in just two weeks time! On 28 April work will start on removing the final buildings in Knapp’s Yard (the boating side of the site) and levelling the ground in preparation for the new boat workshop, camp store and dinghy park (although the actual building of this is a later phase of the project).
Over the next couple of weeks a small team will be emptying the final equipment from the site into a temporary store and rearranging the boats to make room. Whilst this work is going on we ask people to keep clear of The Den and respect the social distancing guidance, although if you’re passing on your daily exercise please do take a look from the distance to see how it’s getting on (and feel free to share with others on the 3rdCB Facebook).
We’re also expecting to start the redesign of The Den’s ground floor in the coming weeks as well – watch this space!
Have you seen our Pass the Scarf video yet? The 3rdCB Beavers, Cubs, Sea Scouts, Explorers and leader team have been showing that coronavirus can’t stop us from coming together as a team to create something great. Now will you pass me that scarf please!
Update: 16 March 2020: I have no doubt that you will by now by aware of the most recent briefing from the Prime Minister. I had hoped to provide a more comprehensive update in a few days’ time however the District Commissioner has taken the decision that all section meetings should cease for the time being.
Sadly at this time there will be no section meetings until further notice.
Members of the Senior Leadership Team are meeting tomorrow to discuss the impact of the latest advice in particular on future planned events. I will provide you all with a full update in a few days.
At the end of February 3rdCB management team held an exciting and productive meeting (so far as committee meetings can be) so move forward with plans to redesign the ground floor of our HQ. After a lot of hard work we have agreed the prime contractor and tender, and plans are ready with only minor adjustments remaining.
We’re hoping for work to start in a matter of weeks to expand our facilities, with phase 1 offering larger changing rooms, new facilities for leaders, and a dedicated classroom to teach water-based skills in. In due course we’ll be redeveloping the boating yard as well, resurfacing it and building a dedicated camp store / boat maintenance building.
We’re very grateful to the many organisations and individuals, too numerous to mention, who’ve donated their time, skills and funding to us so we can move ahead with the project. On Saturday 18 January we held our annual presentation evening, reviewing our adventures and activities over the past year, celebrating the achievements of our Beavers, Cubs, Sea Scouts and Explorers in 2019, and giving out prizes and awards.
Thank you to The Worshipful Mayor of Southend, Cllr John Lamb, for presenting the awards and prizes, and to Leigh Road Baptist Church for their superb support.
In total we gave out 22 awards for teamwork, improving skills and setting an outstanding example, as well as a number of Chief Scout’s and Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards.
We’re excited to have been selected by the Co-op in Leigh as one of the local causes for their Community Fund for the next year. We’re raising funds for a new safety boat, allowing us to expand the opportunities we can offer for activities afloat, getting even more young people out on the water learning new skills, team work and self-reliance.
By signing up as a Co-op member and selecting to support 3rdCB, we get 1% of everything that you spend on Co-op branded products and services. In a previous round a couple of years ago this funding raised over £3,000 for 3rdCB, and paid for one of our new RS Quest sailing dinghy!
