Boxing Day Sail

In the early days of 3rdCB, the Scouts would sail over to the Lighthouse at Canvey Point every Boxing Day with a hamper full of food and pass it to the Lighthouse Keeper stationed there as a Christmas present. Despite the fact that the Lighthouse was taken down in 1957, the Troop continues the tradition of going boating on Boxing Day.

This year was rather cold and windy, but it didn’t stop a team of hardy Scouts, Explorers and leaders going afloat for a couple of hours (in motor boats rather than sailing). The Scouts learned a bit about heavy weather ship handling, and we event rescued a small yacht which had broken its mooring. Then it was all back to the Den for coffee and mince pies.

Christmas Carol & Toy Service

Carol and Toy Service, Christmas 2015The Den hosted the annual Christmas carols and Toy Service on Sunday 13 December, with Scouts and their families joined by the congregation from New Road Fishermen’s Chapel for some festive cheer.

3rdCB Carol and Toy Service, Christmas 2015The Scouts were encouraged to bring gifts for other children less fortunate than themselves around the local area, and did an excellent job – filling two tables with an enormous selection of presents. These gifts will be distributed to needy families around Southend by the Marigold Centre which gives support to troubled families within Southend Borough, and  HARP – a local homeless project, and are very gratefully received.

After the service there was a chance for families to have a catch up over mince pies, coffee and Yule Logs which had been decorated by the Scouts during the week.

Christmas greetings from Ian and all Leaders.

Another Success at Bag Packing Fund Raiser!

Thank you to all the Cubs, Scouts, Explorers & parents who joined us at Morrison’s on the 4th October for the bag packing fund raiser. We took a whopping £1,357.70 in donations! Well done! The leader team got so many comments from the shoppers about how polite and smart you all were.

We’re sharing half of the donations raised with Morrison’s chosen charity, but have been asked back before Christmas (Sun 6th December) to do some more bag packing, when it is much busier and we get to keep everything we take – more details will be out about that nearer the time.

Bag Packing Day

Our share of the money raised is going towards the general Group running/activity fund.

Ron Cox – Gone Home

We’re sad to announce that Ron Cox, President of The Guzzlers, former leader and Ron Coxlong-time friend of the Group, passed away on Wednesday 26th August while in hospital.

Ron lived in Wales, where he was the Scout Association’s Water Activities Advisor for Wales. But before moving away from Leigh, Ron was very active as the Group’s Rover Scout Leader in the early 1960’s. When asked to become the President of the Guzzlers in 2010 he was absolutely delighted and visited the Group as much as he could or gave his advise to the Group in his capacity of Water Advisor. For all we’ve not seen much of him he remained a dear friend of the Group and Guzzlers.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Ron’s wife Betty and his family at this very sad time.

Group AGM & Open Day – Sunday 5th July

2015-Open-Day-PosterOn Sunday 5th July at The Den is our Open Day and Annual General Meeting, starting at 12.00pm. The AGM is an important meeting where Leaders, members and parents agree on the Group reports, accounts and also where the Group Executive Committee members are elected, and we encourage all parents to come along and help shape our future.

After this we’re going to get the BBQ lit, have a lot of fun stalls, games & activities for all the family, and put the Group’s fleet of boats out onto the water to give you a chance to try your hand at sailing (under supervision from our instructors of course).

So come on down and have some fun, and see what the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers have been up to over the past year.
