Our BIG project was launched Saturday, all those that attended had a good time, thanks to Beth for thinking of wine tasting as an idea for an event and arranging it all, and thanks too to Cheryl for providing the food.
Some of the plans for the proposed development were revealed and the sum of £350,000 is needed to provide this. There will be workshop, boat storage, camp storage, changing and shower facilities, training rooms, first aid room and an extensive look-out balcony to enable over-seeing of water activities, this providing excellent Sea Scout and Sea Ranger training opportunities and enabling extending the number of youngsters that can participate.

First of all a Happy New Year to you all and I hope you had an excellent Christmas.
As many of you are now aware 3rd CB bought the former Fisherman’s Yard next door to The Den and over the next couple of years the Group will be fund raising enough money to build on this land and of course still be able to maintain The Den, our fleet of boats and continue to organise the varied activities and trips we run for the children. Quiz night at The Den in aid of Group funds. Sat 19 Jan, 7.00 for 7.30 start. Adults £5, children £3. Get a group together and come and join the fun; bring your own drinks and nibbles.
On our Summer Camp, the Scouts and Rangers cook their meals on open fires. Up until now they have used what we call a hot plate, which is basically a large rectangular sheet of metal that is placed on bricks or logs over the flames. These have served us well over the many years but they have now come to the end of their lives (bent badly out of shape and crumbling away) and we feel that they are now not the safest option for cooking over an open fire. There are exciting developments afoot to create a new Explorer Scout Units linked directly to the Group. Although still linked with the Scout District the new Units will be able to reflect the Group involved. i.e. 3rd Chalkwell Bay would be primarily water orientated while still embracing the other challenges that Explorer Scouting offers. If we go ahead with following this offered route, Ganges, the current Unit meeting at The Den would move off to another venue within Southend West District. The newly formed Unit would be known as “3rd Chalkwell Bay Explorer Unit”, wear our old gold and back scarf and be another Section, completing our ”family” of Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts and Sea Scouts along with our parallel Crew in Solebay Sea Rangers for the 14-18 year old age range. Well done to all Cubs, Scouts, Sea Rangers and Explorers (and of course the leader team, exec committee and army of supporters) for all the hard work preparing for the recent Royal Navy Inspection. On her first visit to The Den, the inspecting officer, Lt Cdr Karen Cahill RN, was particularly impressed with the turnout and smartness of all involved, not to mention the range of activities we’ve managed since the last inspection two years previously, and was pleased to renew 3rd Chalkwell Bay’s RN Recognition.
