We’re returning to Derbyshire over Easter for the Scouts hiking and activity week, based out of Castleton in the Derbyshire Peak District. Dates are departing on Saturday 28th March and returning on Friday 3rd April (Good Friday) 2015.
There will be a varied programme including hill walking, wild camping, swimming and we are hoping to include other activities such as cycling and low level climbing. The centre nestles under the Lose Hill and is a short walk from Edale and the Kinder Scout plateau. There are many challenging walks within close reach of the centre. There will also be the scope, weather permitting, to try out high camping that is an experience that will leave some great memories (older Scouts only). From the start of 2015 there are going to be a few changes in the Groups leadership team.
After 13 dedicated years as Group Scout Leader (GSL), Carol Tissington is standing down from the role at the end of this year. Ian Johnson will be taking over from her as Skip, and Jon Whiteley stepping up to become Scout Leader of Renown Troop. As part of our fundraising effort for the new boating centre project, the Group spend a weekend at Morrison’s in Hadleigh, helping customers pack their shopping for small donation. There was a really good turn out from the Scouts and Explorers, with a few Cubs along as well, and lots of parents coming in to say hello whist they did their shopping. In total we raised over £2,100 during the weekend. Well done to everyone that came along, and thank you to Morrison’s for having us and making us so welcome.
On Wednesday 12 November, Southend Council granted planning permission for the construction of the new boating centre at The Den. Whilst we still have a long way to go – most notably in raising the funds – to make this project a reality, this is a big milestone and allows us to start approaching companies and organisations for grants.
The new building on the site of Knapp’s Yard, next door to the existing HQ, will give us much needed additional teaching, maintenance and storage space, allowing the Group to continue to expand into the 21st century. Contrary to a few media reports, this is an additional building, and not a replacement for the current Den. Read more…
The Scouts and Explorers took part in this years Remembrance Service on a cloudy November morning this year, representing Scouting in Southend to remember those that fell in battle.

On Monday 3 November the Group’s Sea Ranger section, SRS Solebay, are transferring over on mass to become a second Sea Scout Troop at The Den. Solebay formed in 1981 to offer a girls section at The Den before they were routinely accepted into Scouting, but as the organisation and support has shrunk on a national level the difficult decision was taken to move over the Scout Association.

On Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th November 2014 the Group will be taking part in a fundraising event at Morrisons, London Road, Hadleigh. The idea is for members to be at the checkouts offering to pack customers shopping for a small donation to the Group.
Although the Group haven’t done this kind of fundraising before, other Scouts & charities have done, and raised over £500. Subs only cover about 1/3 of the Group’s running costs so events like this are really important for us to sustain the activities and equipment we provide. The donations have been counted, and we raised a massive £2,766 on the day from the Tea Tent, stalls and collections by the Sea Scout and Sea Rangers. This is in addition to the Explorers’ £320 share from the Krazy Kitchen & Coconut shy.
This is an amazing amount, especially from just one day, and we would like to say a huge thank you to the many young people, parents and helpers that came down to support the tea tent, stalls and work on the barriers. Without you we could not have run our side of the Regatta and raise such a high amount.
Next year will hopefully be back to both days and we will need help again from parents. Many of you on the day said that you would be happy to help and get involved. More information will be given out as and when things develop for next year’s event. Again, huge thanks to all involved.
Huge thanks to everyone who visited and supported this year’s Old Leigh Regatta. It’s been a really great day, topped off by winning the Scout Pentathlon against 4th/6th Leigh (in every event!). A special note of thanks to everyone that helped out on stalls and in the tea tent, and that was down early this morning to help set everything up, and pack it all away again this evening.
The money is still being counted to see how much we’ve raised so watch this space.
As you most likely will be aware, this year’s Old Leigh Regatta this year is running slightly different to normal, and we need your help to get the most out of the day. The Leigh Lions are now overseeing the event, with 3rdCB are involved in helping and running a few of our own stalls including the Tea Tent. We have tried to keep as many of the traditional favourites in the Regatta as possible, such as the Coconut Shy, Crazy Kitchen, Cub’s Welly Hoying, Tug of War, the Scout Pentathlon (between ourselves and 4th/6th Leigh) and the Tea Tent selling cakes, rolls, tea and coffee, as well as the Sea Rangers and Sea Scouts distributing programmes and tin collecting as usual. It will all run only on the Sunday 14 September instead of the whole weekend.
As you can imagine we will need help with many of the above events but the main ones are:
- Adults to help man the traffic barriers at the fly-over
- Adults and older children to help in the Tea Tent
- Adults and children to help run the stalls – Crazy Kitchen, Coconut Shy, Hook-a-duck, Face Painting
- General help to get stalls and the Tea Tent set up and dismantled at the end of the day
