May 2022 Newsletter

Summer is where our favourite parts of Scouting happen, and this term is off to a great start. The Explorers got away camping at Belchamps at the end of April with the rest of Southend West District, joined by Cubs and Beavers for an activity day and camp fire; DofE training is well underway with expeditions planned over the coming months; the sailing sessions have been phenomenally well attended, with over 50 people afloat on some days and courses filling up in minutes. And there’s more to come! In this newsletter:

Summer Term Membership Fees

This term’s membership fees are due on 23 May. There has been a slight increase in subs for this year to keep pace with rising costs, but we’re working hard to keep Scouting cheaper than many other activities. You can pay through the Parent Portal on Online Scout Manager.

Band Night @ The Den

Tickets have flown off the virtual shelf for our family band night on Sat 21 May, and the event is now fully booked.

For those joining us on the evening, there’s dancing to the awesome Big Yellow Suitcase, a BBQ, DJ, and later in the evening karaoke in the hall for those who want to show what they’ve got.

Please feel free to bring your own drinks and snacks for the evening. We’re also pleased to announce that Scott and Ten Green Bottles will have their mobile cocktail bar on site too, with all profits going back into 3rdCB!

We’re looking forward to seeing you all there for a great evening.

Name The New Rib

After 2 weeks of voting the results are in from our poll on what to name our new safety boat. And the winner is… <drumroll>… “Nelson”.

A name long associated with 3rdCB, Nelson was name of the original Sea Scout Troop and the Group’s first RIB. In Naval links, HMS Nelson was a WW1 battleship, sister to HMS Rodney, and the present day Naval Base in Portsmouth. Thank you to everyone who voted.

Summer Camp

Summer Camp is just around the corner over the first week of the school holidays (23-30 July). Signing up is slightly different this year, and we’re using the OSM Parent Portal for registrations and payments. Parents should have received an email already with the details, or can visit the Events section of the Parent Portal.

Den Open Day – Saturday 2 July – 1230-1800

Join us at The Den for the Group’s annual Open Day and BBQ. A chance to see what we get up to, take a look round out new facilities, get out on the water in some of our boats, meet the leaders and other parents, and enjoy a summer BBQ in Old Leigh. All family and friends welcome.
