Water Activities Programme

The sailing season is now with us and we’re excited to be getting back on the water for 2022.

Scout and Explorer parents should have already received this years programme of water activities and courses, as a reminder the Boating Calendar is online at 3rdCB.org.uk/events/boating/, kick starting this weekend. These sessions are open to all Sea Scouts and Explorers, and there is also a day afloat planned for the Beavers and Cubs in late August (details from your leaders nearer the time).

The first open boating sessions are over the Easter weekend (no need to book), with courses starting at the end of April (bookings open here 3 weeks before each course).

Name That Boat

In 2021 we expended our fleet of powerboats with a new 6m RIB, supported by funding from Sports England and Co-Op Community Fund. With the start of the sailing season it’s being run in and is almost ready for use.

BUT… we need a name for it, and want the help of our members to decide on one. After much discussion we’ve narrowed the list of names down to four options. Please take a look at the Name the Boat post at 3rdCB.org.uk/2022/name-that-boat/ to read about the different names and vote for which one you think we should go for.

Building Works at The Den

The major refurbishment of our facilities is still underway. The heads & changing rooms are now complete, as is the wardroom redecoration and slipway. You may have noticed the new davit that’s appeared in the yard, which will drastically ease launching our safety boats, and the new training room is all kitted out with training aids and IT to run this years water activity courses.

Still to come is the installation of the waterfront pontoon to assist launching boats, the replacement of the aging cladding and windows in The Den (all original from over 40 years ago!), and revised planning permission is going in for the boating and camp store in the yard. Watch this space for more updates!

Presentation Evening

On Saturday 26 March we came together as a Group to celebrate the achievements of our Beavers, Cubs, Sea Scouts, Explorers and leaders over the past year at our annual Presentation Evening. It was great to see what a busy year we’ve had and how much everyone’s achieved coming out of a couple of challenging years of lockdown.

Well done to everyone that received an award – we gave out over 22 Scouting awards and 9 Duke of Edinburgh awards across the whole Group.

If you missed our video review of 2021 you can watch it again at: https://youtu.be/–SxA5Vn8Eo, and all the photos are on Facebook.

Easter Fun in the Peak District

In the first week of April 39 Scouts and Young Leaders, along with 10 leaders, headed north to the village of Castleton for a week of hillwalking and activities in the Derbyshire Peak District. Whilst the previous week’s sunny weather didn’t exactly hold out for us, it didn’t dampen any spirits and was a great week in the hills learning how to hike and navigate (and occasionally getting lost), along with some cycling, swimming and lots of games. Photos of the week are all on the members Facebook Group to give a taste of what we got up to.

The centre is already booked for next year, so get the dates in your calendar now: 1-8 April 2023!
