Carrying on Scouting… Virtually

Scouting since March has been very different to what we’re used to, but following in our Founder’s spirit of innovation we’re managing to carry on our activities online, pressing on with challenges and learning new skills for life every week. We’ve held online meetings, virtual quiz nights, completed badges at home, camped out in the back garden or made dens at home, renewed our promise on the internet, and come together for video projects that have started national trends! All thanks to a fantastic and imaginative bunch of young people and adults who make 3rdCB one of the best Scout Groups to be a part of!

Virtual Meetings

The Group Executive meeting online in Teams

Over the past few months we’ve held online meetings to play games, set challenges and keep up with our youth members, and the management teams have been meeting over video conferences to ensure that critical business carries on. Even Akela has got her head around Teams, Zoom and Facebook Live.

The first 3rdCB Virtual Quiz Night

The Beavers renewed their promise online and had a sing along, whilst the Scouts have been playing quizzes and scavenger hunts.

In April we hosted an online quiz for all members and families in the Group, a really well supported and fun event, including a hilarious “guess the leader from their baby photo” round. Huge thanks to Laurence, Marcus and all the team that put it together.

Badges at Home

We’ve been encouraging our youth members to carry on learning new Skills for Life at home through Scouting’s numerous activity and challenge badges. The Parent Portal allows you to see what badges you can do, and upload videos and photos of youth members completing badge requirements at home. So far we’ve awarded dozens of badges across the Group in this way, and seen some amazing creations of cooking, model making, science experiments and learning new skills.

Parents: if you’ve not had an email with details of how to sign up, please drop a line to and we’ll send you an invite.

The Great IndoorsScouting has also launched The Great Indoors pulling together some inspired indoor activity ideas to keep kids entertained while schools are closed due to coronavirus. Keep your kids learning new skills and having fun (and avoid hearing ‘I’m bored’ every 30 seconds) all in #TheGreatIndoors at

Camp Out at Home

By this time of year we’ve normally held several camps and trips, with plans for weekend and summer camps all ready to go to. Unfortunately a little global pandemic has put a stop to all of that. So instead we’ve been camping at home.

Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, and even Explorers, have been setting up tents in back gardens or making dens in living rooms to carry on with the fun of camping, even if it’s a little closer to home than usual. We’ve loved seeing the photos of their mini adventures, and can’t wait until we can get back to real camping again.

Video Projects

We’ve undertaken a few video projects to bring people together over the past few months – our Pass the Scarf video has even started a national trend with other Scout Groups in the UK! Along with that, we’ve renewed our Scouting Promise online, and shared our history for VE Day. We’d love your ideas for the next project!
