Since the publication of Scouting for Boys in 1908, all Scouts around the world have taken a promise to live up to ideals of the movement, and subscribed to a Scout Law.
The wording of the Scout Promise and Scout Law have varied slightly over time and from country to country. Typically, Scouts will make the three-fingered Scout Sign when reciting the promise. The Scout Promise
On my honour, I promise,
that I will do my best, to do my duty to God and the Queen, to help other people, and to keep the Scout Law. The Scout Law

- A Scout is loyal.
- A Scout is friendly and considerate.
- A Scout belongs to the world-wide family of Scouts.
- A Scout has courage in all difficulties.
- A Scout makes good use of time and is careful of possessions and property.
- A Scout has self-respect and respect for others.
